Abstract

1,164,069. Low temperature chlorine separation process. G. O. SHIPTON (F.M.C. Corp.). 30 Jan., 1968, No. 4625/68. Heading F4P. Chlorine is separated from a compressed gaseous mixture thereof with relatively incondensible gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide referred to as inserts by cooling the mixture at a pressure between 3 and 15 atmospheres in heat exchangers 3, 4 thereby liquefying the major portion of the chlorine which is withdrawn as product through lines 11, 12, further cooling to at least - 80‹ F. the inert gases containing the minor portion of uncondensed chlorine thereby liquefying the chlorine, separating in a cyclone 8 the liquid chlorine containing a minor portion of inerts from the uncondensed inerts, expanding the withdrawn liquid chlorine to about atmospheric pressure in a valve 13 thereby re-vaporizing a portion thereof and using the cold so produced in the exchanger 6 effect said further cooling of the uncondensed gas mixture leaving heat exchanger 4 and to effect complete re-vaporization of the liquid withdrawn from cyclone 8 which vapour is returned through a line 9 to the inlet of the feed stock compressor 1. Inert gases withdrawn from the cyclone 8 through a line 10 are either directly vented to atmosphere or are expanded in a valve 14 and the cold so produced recovered in heat exchanger 6.
