To give a better indication at both near and distant viewing distances of the switch positions on an electric cooker, each control knob 2 carries an eccentric 14 which positions a pivoted translucent indicator 9 behind a respective transparent panel section 8, thereby varying the area illuminated by a lamp 15 in accordance with the switch position. The edge 10 may also indicate the switch position on a scale at the edge of the panel (Fig. 2, not shown). A single lamp 15 may illuminate a plurality of adjacent panel sections or each section may have its respective lamp.
