Abstract

A method of producing plates of wood or other fibrous material comprises cutting at least one board 3 simultaneously into a plurality of parallel strips having laterally wider sides and upper and lower narrower sides, moving the strips so as to increase the lateral distance between them and tilting them to one side so as to lie with one wider side on a support 11 adjacent and substantially parallel to each other, passing the strips in this position through a drier 9, applying glue at least to the narrow sides of the strips facing each other and applying the narrow sides of all adjacent strips against each other to combine the strips to form a plate, and compressing the plate by exerting a lateral pressure in opposite directions upon the narrow outer sides of the outermost strips. A plate so formed may be used as the centre layer of plywood boards. In apparatus for carrying out the method, one or more boards 3 are moved by a carriage to a strip saw 1 which cuts the boards into the plurality of strips. The strips are laterally separated and tilted over on to their wider sides by a mechanism 7 which may have a guiding comb and a transversely movable belt or consist of curved guide means. The spaced strips are carried by a conveyer 11 through a drier 9 and through a mechanism 13 for grinding one or both of the horizontal surfaces of the strips. The strips then pass to a conveying and spreading mechanism 15 where glue application rollers 17 apply glue to the narrow sides of the strips. While in the mechanism 15, defective strips may be removed and replaced. The glued strips are moved towards each other by rollers 19 and pressed together in a press 21. A travelling saw 23 cuts the assembled strips into plates 25 which may be glued together to form plates 27 of desired length.
