Abstract
1,163,914. Automatic lathes. PNEUMO DYNAMICS CORP. 14 Sept., 1966 [14 Sept., 1965], No. 40975/66. Heading B3T. In a machine tool such as a multi-spindle lathe having a cam shaft 20 and an indexable spindle carrier 15 rotatable about parallel axes, a cross slide operating mechanism is provided which comprises two banks of coaxial operating levers 137-139 and 140-143 mounted in the machine frame for pivotal movement about axes parallel to the axis of the cam-shaft, a plurality of cylindrical rocker shafts 120-126 angularly disposed around the spindle carrier for rotary oscillation about axes parallel to the axis of the spindle carrier, each rocker shaft having a crank for the connection of one of a bank of connecting rods 170-176 relatively disposed on each side of the cam-shaft, the oscillation of the rocker shafts effecting reciprocation of the cross slides. The slides are connected to the rocker shafts by eccentrically mounted rollers 80 which extend axially from the end of the rocker shafts and which engage in slots in the respective slides. The slides are constituted by primary and secondary members 60 and 66 respectively which are relatively adjustable to permit the setting of the cross slide assembly in relation to the spindle carrier. The slot in which the roller 80 engages to effect reciprocation of the slides may be provided in the underside of the secondary slide member 66 or alternatively in a cylindrical rotatable insert (106), Figs. 9 and 11 (not shown) located in the secondary, the stroke of the slide may be adjusted by rotation of the insert (106) to change the angular position of the slot (108) therein. The slide members are clamped together after the required adjustment has been effected. One cross slide is provided at each spindle station and an additional slide may be provided at least at one of the spindle stations.
