Abstract

1,163,911. Feeding record tapes; data storage. ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd. 5 June, 1967 [6 June, 1966], No. 25036/66. Headings G4C and G5K. In a magnetic data recording apparatus, data is recorded while the medium is stationary by energization of a recording head in response to which an electric circuit operates to step-drive a spool for the medium. As described, tape or wire 9 is wound stepwise on to spool 7 by a solenoid-operated pawl-and-ratchet device 5 arranged to drive the spool as the solenoid is de-energized. The solenoid winding (41, Fig. 2, not shown) and each information winding (31) of a multi-track head 3 are associated with a diode matrix 2 controlled by a keyboard 1 to record binary and parity digits. A bias winding (32) per track is supplied with an antiphase bias current which is overcome by the information to effect recording. Several heads may be spaced along the tape for simultaneous or successive recording.
