1,163,908. Printing device; addressing machine. PITNEY-BOWES Inc. 15 Nov., 1966 [24 Nov., 1965], No. 51151/66. Headings B6C and B6D. A printing device comprises a base with support means for a printing plate; a carriage mounted for reciprocating and pivotal movement over the plate; an inking and impression roller supported in the carriage; and control means for lowering the roller into contact with a sheet covering the printing plate as the carriage moves across the base. General arrangement.-An addressing machine, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a base 2 supporting a platen 124 for a printing plate 151; a carriage 12 is mounted to reciprocate along and pivot about a slide-rod 10 under the control of a guide roller 72 engaging a guide-rod 70 which is provided with two notches 108, 110 having inclined cam surfaces 118 so that at the limit of the traverse of the carriage, guide roller 72 enters one of the notches and lifts the carriage away from the base. The carriage supports an eccentrically mounted print roller 14 which is inked by means of an internal resilient ink-retaining member (60), Fig. 4 (not shown); the extent to which the print roller projects beneath the arm 22 of carriage 12 is adjustable since the shaft (44), Fig. 7 (not shown), of roller 14 is eccentric with respect to its extension pieces (42), (56) which are mounted in bearings on the arm 22. Plate latching.-The base 2 is formed with a longitudinal groove 122 in which is secured a flat platen 124 with tapered ends (126), Fig. 8 (not shown), notched at 128 to provide access to latch plates 130 which are pivoted at 132 under the action of compression springs (136) to latch a printing plate 151 in position. Guide plates 148, 150 limit upward movement of a printing plate, and a movable dog (156) tends to hold a printing plate against the latch plates 130. Inking-roller drive.-The print roller 14 is preferably arranged to be positively driven over the printing plate during traverse of the carriage, Figs. 9-11 (not shown). A flexible cable (206) attached to brackets (208, 210) in side plates 6, 8 is sufficiently taut as to rotate a pulley (176) when the carriage 12 is manually traversed in either direction along slide-rod 10; the pulley (176) is geared to the shaft (44) of the print roller. The inked print roller may be replaced by a plain roller impressing on carbon paper.
