In an alarm, e.g. fire or burglar, system which includes an alarm circuit and a sounder circuit for producing an audible signal, at E, in response to an abnormal condition, at A, in the alarm circuit, a fault warning circuit provides an indication of a fault in the sounder circuit. The fault warning circuit is independently powered by battery F and includes audible and visible indicators H, J, selectively incorporated into the circuit by switch K. The fault warning circuit is normally broken by contacts G<SP>1</SP> of relay G which is normally energized by the current flowing in the sounder circuit but which current is insufficient to operate the sounder E, e.g. a siren or a hooter. A fault in the sounder circuit, such as a severed lead or failure or shortcircuiting of the mains supply, de-energizes relay G to close contacts G<SP>1</SP> and operate indicator J or H. The alarm circuit may be of the normally closed or open type. In the closed type shown, breaking of the alarm circuit at devices A deenergizes relay C to close contacts C<SP>1</SP> and operate sounder E. Devices A may be fire-alarm push-buttons or heat or smoke detectors.
