Abstract

1,163,290. Forming tubes from strip. YODER CO. 2 Dec., 1966, No. 54011/66. Heading B3E. A roll unit for, a tube mill, i.e. for apparatus for bending, by engagement with rollers, strip passed longitudinally therethrough to form longitudinally seamed tube, for forming tubes of different finished diameters, comprises a stand adapted to be positioned transversely to the length of the tube mill, oppositely inclined slide tables on each side of said stand, roller supports on each slide table mounted for movement therealong, and strip-contacting rollers mounted on said roller supports. Metal strip, is bent up into tubular form by passage between rollers of roll stands 4, 5, 9, 13, 24, 30, 31 and over rollers 96 of multiple roller assemblies 6, 10, 14, 25 between the roll stands. The longitudinal seam of the tubing thus formed is welded by means 33 and the tubing is drawn out by means 34 to be severed into lengths. An upper roll 52, Fig. 4, of the roll stand 5 may be replaced by a unit 108, Fig. 5, having rolls 109. The assembly 6 comprises shafts 85, 94 extending, one on each side of the mill, between the roll stands 4 and 5 and carrying, on brackets 97, rolls 96 engaging the strip. The shafts 85, 94 are supported by slides 82, 92 adjustable by screws 87, 93, 106 on inclined slideways 75, 76, 105, supported by stands 8, 7. The adjustment, to suit various widths of strip, is such that the rolls 96 on opposite sides of the mill move in paths which intersect on a horizontal line extending longitudinally of the mill and aligned with the bottom of the finished tube. The assembly 10 is similar to the assembly 6 and the shafts 112 thereof are in line with the shafts 85, 94 of the assembly 6. The slope of the slideways increases from the entry to the exit of the mill. The assembly 14, Figs. 9, 10, has four roll-carrying shafts 130, 131, 132, 133, the shafts 130, 133 being carried by adjustable columns 149, 150. The assembly 25 is similar to the assembly 14 but has in addition a longitudinally-extending vertically-adjustable beam carrying a series of rolls to engage the central outer part of the strip. The slideways may be adjustable in inclination by screw means, Fig. 20 (not shown). The rollers on each side may be adjusted simultaneously by screw and common bevel gear means, Fig. 21 (not shown).
