Abstract
1,162,898. Hydroxy-alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids. BALM PAINTS Ltd. 18 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 57365/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Hydroxy-alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting one of maleic, chloromaleic, dichloromaleic, citraconic or fumaric acids, or one of the alkyl acid esters of maleic, chloromaleic, dichloromaleic or citraconic acids at 50-120‹ C. with an alkylene oxide of the formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, halogen substituted alkyl, methylol or methylol alkyl ester group, in the presence of at least 0À1% by weight, calculated on the weight of the selected member, of a catalyst of the formula in which R 2 and R 3 each denote a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group in which R 2 and R 3 are common members of a 5-7 membered heterocyclic ring which apart from the amide nitrogen atom has a hydrocarbon structure, optionally containing one additional nitrogen or oxygen atom ring member; and in which R 4 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or an -N(R 3 ) 2 group; and wherein R 2 and R 4 together with the grouping may be members of a ring having 5 to 7 members which apart from the said grouping has a hydrocarbon structure. The catalyst is chosen from linear or cyclic amides and may be, for example, N,N-dimethyl formamide or N,N-dimethylacetamide. Preferred examples of the alkylene oxide are 1,2- propylene oxide and 1,2-butylene oxide. Examples describe the preparation of (2-hydroxy) propyl- and butyl n-octyl maleate, (2-hydroxy) propyl stearyl maleate, di (2-hydroxy) propyl maleate, fumarate and citraconate, (2-hydroxy) propyl n-butyl maleate, the glycidyl methacrylate ester of n-octyl maleate, a branched fatty acid glycidyl ester of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol maleate, (2-hydroxy) propyl ester of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol dichloromaleate and maleate.
