Abstract

1,162,888. Lasers. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 13 Sept., 1967 [3 Jan., 1967], No. 41793/67. Heading H1C. [Also in Division C4] A laser material having a crystal structure between cubic and hexagonal or orthorhombic comprises CaF 2 and a rare earth fluoride. Materials having specified proportions comprising CaF 2 and ErF 3 ; CaF 2 , ErF 3 and TmF 2 or HoF 3 ; CaF 2 , ErF 3 , YbF 3 , TmF 3 and HoF 3 are described. In the preparation of the material, commercial rare earth oxide is dissolved in HCl and added to an ion exchange column where impurities are removed using DTPA and EDTA. Rare earth oxalate is precipitated from the purified solution and burned to form the oxide which is reacted with HF to form the fluoride. This is fused with CaF 2 in a He atmosphere containing HF. A laser device producing pulsed or continuous wave action comprises an elliptical cavity having a highly polished inner surface with a laser rod and an optical pumping quartz iodine or Xenon lamp at the ellipse foci. The rod is maintained at room temperature or at 100‹ K. It has large radius polished ends one fully silvered and the other partially.
