A protective cap 5 for fire extinguishers, of the type which have a head cap 1 surmounted by an actuating knob 2 for a gas cartridge piercer, has its open end, which is inverted on the extinguisher cap, provided with slits 6 about “" deep, to form two or more tabs 7 which deform inwardly to grip the sides of cap 1 while the edges of the open end between the tabs sit on .the shoulder 4 of the cap.
