Abstract

1,161,590. Photographic type-composing. DR.-ING RUDOLF HELL. 26 Feb., 1968 [25 Feb., 1967], No. 9234/68. Heading B6W. [Also in Division H4] A method of operating an electronic phototypesetter, operating by rastering, by organizing the core memory thereof, comprises calling up the character to be set, independent of upper or lower ease and of script type and size, under a binary coded number allocated to said character, and addressing with this calling up a storage cell of the core memory, from which cell the address of each character in the desired script type and size in which it is to be set as well as the data concerning the width of said character are taken. A reading device 22 scans the data-carrying tape 23 and feeds the data to a core memory 14 comprising a plurality of matrix plates 24 each having two systems of horizontal and vertical wires, the cross points of each having a magnetic ring core. All ring cores in the same line and column have the same calling up address and constitute a memory cell. Each plate has at least 16,000 ring cores, and at least 100 additional cores for the organization part. Fourteen digits of each cell are used for the image content and two for fount selection. A computer 19 calls up the number of the character to be set in the organization part via a control device 20, the number being called up via the address registers 16, 17. The data combination corresponding to the address is fed into the cell from an input register 15. The control device 21 causes an output register 18 to read out the memory address from the cell and feeds it to the address registers. The image content of the first image column is read out and fed to the control device 21 which controls the brightness of the ray of the cathode-ray tube 11. The deflection of the ray is controlled by the computer. The device 21 counts the memory data and when a column is complete calls up the address of the next column. Setting commands are given by the computer. A photographic image of the character is produced on a film 13.
