Abstract

1,160,857. Slow-wave structures. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 22 April, 1968 [24 April, 1967], No. 18960/68. Heading H1D. Attenuation in a slow-wave structure is provided by the incorporation of one or more single crystals of a semi-conductor, e.g. germanium or silicon, which may be secured to the structure by gold diffusion alloying or by glazing. As applied to a helix, Fig. 1, a plurality of semi-conductor single crystal rods 3, longitudinally staggered as shown to reduce reflection, may be secured to the helix turns, or a short length of one of the dielectric support rods 2 may be replaced by a crystal tapered at each end (Fig. 2, not shown). In a coupled cavity structure (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), semi-conductor rods may be axially disposed within a cavity symmetrically around the axis of the structure, the ends of the rods being secured to the transverse end walls of the cavity. In a Karp structure, Fig. 5, tapered semi-conductor plates 23 are secured to one end of the ladder face, which is preferably arranged, as shown, to bisect the electron beam.
