1,159,933. Catalytic isomerization of alkylene oxides. RUMANIA, MINISTRY OF INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS. 24 Aug., 1966, No. 37914/66. Heading C2C. Isomerization of a 1,2-alkylene oxide containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule to the corresponding unsaturated alcohol is effected by passing the alkylene oxide at a temperature between 200‹ and 350‹ through a layer of solid granular catalyst suspended in the vapour stream so that the catalyst serves as a fluidized bed or as a solid in pneumatic transport state. The preferred catalyst is lithium ortho phosphate, which contains 0 to 50% by weight of specified inert fillers and is in the form of grains of 0À1 to 1 mm. in diameter. According to a further embodiment of the invention the activity of resin-contaminated catalyst may be regenerated either by raising the temperature of the catalyst to 40-50‹ C. above the normal operating temperature for 15 to 45 minutes at the completion of specified operating periods or by cycling a solvent for the contaminating resins upward through the catalyst under conditions which maintain the solvent in the liquid state and at a flow rate which does not carry the catalyst out of the reactor. The process may be carried out in a vertical cylindrical reactor wherein the catalyst is in the form of a single layer, layer ranges or a layer provided with baffles at various levels. The isomerization of propylene oxide to alkyl alcohol is described.
