Abstract

1,159,705. Separating gases. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 2 Aug., 1966, No. 34553/66. Heading B1L. [Also in Division C5] In cyclic systems for the continuous separation of components of fluid mixtures in which the fluid stream is continuously circulated through a mass of sorbent, into which system in succession the feed stream is injected, raffinate is withdrawn, desorbent is injected and desorbed sorbate is withdrawn, and in which systems a continuous or intermittent relative motion is maintained between the mass of sorbent and the feed inlet point, which relative motion is countercurrent to the flow of the fluid stream through the system, a raffinatetype compound which is however readily separable from the raffinate, e.g. by distillation, is introduced to the system at a point upstream of the feed inlet but downstream of the desorbed sorbate outlet, whereby feedstock is thoroughly flushed from the countercurrently flowing stream of sorbent particles passing upstream to the sorbate-recovery zone of the cycle. In a first embodiment (see Fig. 1, not shown), the various inlet and outlet points are fixed while the mass of sorbent passes continuously and in succession through the treatment zones; in a second embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown) however, a fixed mass of sorbent is divided into a large number of unit beds, intermittent relative motion between the mass of sorbent and the various inlet and outlet points being achieved by successively switching these points through the sequence of unit beds. In the examples, mixtures of normal and branched chain hexanes; n-hexane and cyclohexane; and aromatics and non-aromatics were separated. In the latter separation, charcoal was used as sorbent, steam as desorbent for the aromatics and n-pentane as the raffinabe-type compound; in the two former separations, calcium aluminosilicate molecular sieve was used as sorbent, n-butane as the desorbent for the n-hexane, and iso-butane as the raffinate-type compound. Other stated applications include the drying of nitrogen or air, and the removal of amines, mercaptans, phenols or thiophene from hydrocarbon fractions.
