A brake actuating member 23, 24, can be depressed either by fluid pressure on a diaphragm 15, or by a spring 6 acting on a piston 4, the member 23 being movable through a greater distance by the spring actuation than by pressure actuation (as in the parent Specification) and in addition a conical spring 22 forces the brake actuating member 23 against the diaphragm 15. The diaphragm 15 receives fluid pressure from a port 28 and acts on a diaphragm plate having two parts 16, 19 which move together until the edge 21 of the part 19 engages the wall of the chamber 3. Further depression of the part 16 is possible by a rod 11 and bearing member 10 carried on the piston 4, until pins 31, 31a, in the part 16 and in a flanged tube 25, respectively, engage the ends of axial slots 32, 32a in a cylindrical extension 20 of the part 19 of the diaphragm plate. The flanged tube 25 is movable away from the diaphragm plate 16, 19 whereas in the parent Specification it is attached to it. An aperture in the end wall of the chamber 3 is large enough to allow the flanged tube 25 to pass through it, thus increasing the distance through which the brake actuating member 23, 24 can be moved by the spring loaded piston 4.
