Abstract

1,159,322. Two-part couplings. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Jan., 1968 [14 Jan., 1967], No. 1664/68. Heading H2E. A multiple-socket connector 3 comprises an insulating housing 4 with integral partitions 17, 21 dividing it into compartments 19, each housing a sheet-metal spring contact 25, 27, 29, 31 having a straight portion 29 engaging the partition 21 and a bent portion 31 soldered to printed wiring 32 on an insulating plate 1, and being held in position by a glued-in strip 33, e.g. of glass-polyester, having slots (not shown) for engaging lugs 39 on the partitions 21 and slots (not shown) in the portions 29 of the spring contacts. Contact pins 9 of a mating connector 5 have bevelled lower ends which enter apertures 23 in connector 3 and are resiliently held between the ends 25 of the contact springs and the side walls of connector 3; upper ends threading apertures 41 in a fixed insulating plate 7 and soldered to a printed circuit thereon or receiving wrapped-wire connections; and wider central portions 40 secured on the insulating body 8 of the connector 5 by a slotted insulating strip 43 engaging slots in the pins 9. At each end of the body 8, a channel-shaped extension 11 fits the end 13 of the connector 3 which has an extension 15 bolted to the plate 1. The spring contacts may be punched from sheet metal with their ends 31 connected by a strip which is broken off after insertion into connector 3 and after gluing the securing strip 33. The contact pins 9 may be similarly punched, having strips connecting both ends. To form the bevelled ends, U-shaped grooves are punched adjacent one strip, which is broken off; the pins are inserted into the connector 5 and the second strip removed. Preferably, the contact ends of the pins are gold-coated. Alternatively, if a supporting strip 43 is omitted, the second connecting strip is broken off, the free ends of the pins 9 are soldered in a printed circuit on the plate 7, and finally the strip adjacent the V-shaped grooves is removed.
