Abstract
1,159,065. Power storing apparatus; valves. H. KORTHAUS, and R. WILKE. 22 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23592/67. Headings F2S and F2V. [Also in Division H2] An electric motor has the rotary motion of its rotor converted into linear motion of an output shaft by means of a self-locking nut and spindle arrangement and the output shaft drives a load through a device which operates on power failure to move the load into a safety position. As shown, the device comprises an outer easing 3a enclosing a cylindrical casing 16 which under normal conditions is connected to casing 3a by armature 21 of an electromagnetically operated locking device. A compressed spring 11 is enclosed within easing 16 and bears on plate 14 attached to the end of output shaft 2. Casing 16 is closed by eye bolt 4 which is connected to the load. When a power failure occurs coil 22 of the locking device is de-energized and armature 21 is disengaged from cams 19 by spring 24 to release casing 16 which moves to the left under the action of spring 11 thereby moving the load to the initial or safe position, Fig. 3 (not shown). The device may be reset by moving the motor to its initial position when armature 21 will again lock between cams 19 on casing 16. In a modification the spring may be placed between plate 14 and bolt 4 to provide a fail safe movement in the opposite direction, Figs. 4-6 (not shown). In an alternative construction, Fig. 9 (not shown), the load is driven by a lever which is connected to the linearly moving output shaft of the motor by a prestressed torsion spring and an electromagnetic coupling. It is stated that the spring may be replaced by an explosive charge which is fired by movement of armature 21, or pressurized gases or liquids can be used. A longer travel can be provided by use of telescopic cylinders and the closing force may be graduated by using a multiple spring arrangement. The device is used as a trip arrangement in a valve actuator or in nuclear reactors.
