Abstract

1,158,830. TiO 2 nuclei. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 10 July, 1968 [8 Aug., 1967], No. 36288/67. Heading C1N. Nuclei for Ti sulphate hydrolysis are prepared by freezing and remelting an aqueous suspension or cake of TiO 2 nuclei and separating the solid nuclei from the liquid. The cooling rate is at least 4‹ C. per min., at least from 1‹ C. above to 4‹ C. below the f.pt., e.g. 20- 30‹ C. per min., and freezing may be instantaneous. The suspension may contain 10% by wt. or less TiO 2 , and may be cooled by dropping it into liquid N 2 , O 2 or air, or solid CO 2 , or by spraying it on to a surface cooled by liquid N 2 or air. It may be allowed to melt, or heated at below 100‹ C., and then separated by filter or centrifuge. The suspension may be reconstituted by mixing the nuclei with water or HCI in a ball mill, and added to a solution of Ti sulphate obtained by digesting Ti slag or ilmenite in H 2 SO 4 . The TiO 2 obtained on hydrolysis may be calcined at 860‹ or 885‹ C. after addition of K 2 SO 4 , ZnSO 4, and ammonium phosphate. The initial nuclei may be anatose or rutile inducing and may be obtained by thermal hydrolysis of aqueous TiCl 4 after partial neutralization with NaOH.
