Abstract

115,859. Lake, G. W., and Smith, F. W. Jan. 10, 1917. Explosives. -- A special process for loading shells with explosives consists in placing a shell 21, Fig. 4, in a tank 15, heating it by admitting hot water to the tank, filling the shell with explosive through a cylinder 23, compressing the explosive by a ram 32 operated by an hydraulic piston 36 while air escapes from the shell by a bypass 28, and cooling the shell by admitting cold water to the tank. A branch pipe 55 serves to supply molten explosive to the apparatus. To permit the insertion and removal of the shell from the tank, the upper part 34 of the apparatus is unbolted and moved aside by a hoisting-gear 47, Fig. 2. The operations are controlled from outside the loadind room 39 by means of valves 41, 51, 52. An oven is provided in the loading room to heat the shells beforehand.
