Abstract
1,158,355. Copolymerizing olefins. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 1 Feb., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 5154/68. Heading C3P. Copolymerizing ethylene, an alpha-olefin of the formula R-CH=CH 2 where R is an aliphatic, branched or straight-chain hydrocarbon radical of less than 7 carbon atoms, and optionally a non-conjugated diene in an amount such that the formed terpolymer has an iodine number of at most 50, under a pressure of 1 to 30 atmospheres, a temperature in range of -30‹ to +50‹ C., in presence of a halohydrocarbon as dispersing medium in which the copolymer is insoluble, a catalyst comprising a vanadium compound and an organoaluminium compound, soluble in the dispersing medium, and an inert inorganic solid of particle size 0À005 Á to 100 Á which is present in an amount of 0À0001 to 10% by weight of the medium. The copolymerizable mix is stirred, or mechanically agitated. Specified alpha-olefins are propylene, butene-1, isobutene, pentene-1, hexene, and 4-methylpentene-1. Non-conjugated dienes mentioned are 1,4-cis and trans-hexadiene, 5-(2<SP>1</SP> and/or 3<SP>1</SP>- methyl - 2<SP>1</SP>- butenyl) - norbornene - 2, 5 - methylene - norbornene - 2, 5 - ethylidene - norbornene - 2, and dicyclopentadiene. The inert solid may be NaCI, KCI, NaF, CaF 2 , KF.BF 3 , 2KF.SiF 4 , K 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , CaSO 4 , BaSO 4 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , ZnCO 3 , Na 2 B 4 O 7 , glauberite, phosphorite, apatite, hydroxyl-apatite, talcum, silica, kaolinite, feldspar, alkali metal zeolite, spinel, zinc spinel, oligoklas, and compounds of elements in Groups I and II of the Periodic Table. Suitable dispersing media are 1,2-dichloropropane, ethyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, and methylene chloride. The copolymer is recovered from the polymerization mix in the form of beads, and any inert inorganic material present therein readily removed by washing. Terpolymers may be sulphur vulcanized.
