Abstract

1,158,163. Polymer compositions. BERK Ltd. 9 June, 1967 [15 June, 1966], No. 26693/66. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. Compositions comprise at least one polyamide, polyimide, polycarbonate, polyether, polyformaldehyde, polyvinyl acetal, epoxy melamine/formaldehyde, urea/formaldehyde, silicone or polyvinyl chloride resin, cellulose ester, acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene or acrylonitrile/styrene copolymer, or natural or synthetic rubber and as fire retardant at least one compound of formula ArBr m Cl n R or ArBr y Cl x OR where Ar is an aromatic residue, m is 3 or more, n is 0, 1 or 2, x is 0 or an integer and R is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl group which may be halogenated, and y is # 3, provided that when x is 0 and R is hydrogen y is 3. Specified fire retardants are tetrabromobenzene, pentabromotoluene, tribromophenol, pentabromophenyl allyl ether, pentabromophenyl n-propyl ether, tribromo toluene, tribromophenyl allyl ether and hexabromo-diphenyl ether. The compositions may also comprise antimony oxide, and the polyamide resins may be glass reinforced. Examples describe compositions comprising antimony oxide together with (1-3) glass fibre filled nylon 11 and pentabromotoluene.
