Printing- surfaces.-A plate, e.g. of aluminium or zinc, is coated with toner particles, e.g. polystyrene and carbon black, which are fused to the plate in design areas to form a printing plate by means of a beam of radiant energy, e.g. a laser beam, the beam and plate being moved relatively to trace out images. In one form, the beam is stationary and the plate is moved by and X-Y positioning mechanism under control of an electronic data processor. For the spaces between characters, the beam is cut off by a shutter controlled by the processor. In another form, a rotating mirror carries the beam to scan the plate while at the end of each scan-line the plate is moved a step transversely to the line. In another form, the shutter is an electrooptical shutter and the beam is deflected by an electro-optical deflector. After fusing, the surplus toner is removed. For an offset printing plate, the plate is hydrophilic and the toner hydrophobic and the plate is immersed in water and then in oil-base ink. For a relief plate, the toner is acid-resistant and forms an etching resist. For an intaglio plate, the plate is acidresistant and the toner is a catalytic toner to facilitate etching. Printing-processes.-The above-described process can be used to print directly by coating a paper sheet with a toner, such as wax and carbon black, having a lower fusing temperature than the kindling temperature of the paper.
