Abstract
1,157,398. Treating olefin copolymer elastomers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 12 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 6846/68. Heading C3P. Sulphur curable α-mono-olefin/non-conjugated diene copolymer elastomers are reacted in bulk with a sulphur mono- or di-chloride or -bromide in an amount sufficient to reduce the cold compression set of the elastomer by at least 10% without substantially changing its sulphur curability. The polymer may be derived from ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene, dicyclopentadiene or a norbornene. Sulphur monohalides are preferred as the products are peptizable, e.g. with xylyl mercaptan. The polymer may be oil extended and the sulphur halide may be added as a solution. Reaction may be effected in an extruder. In examples ethylene/propylene/1,4.hexadiene copolymers, optionally extended with paraffinic oils, are treated with sulphur monochloride.
