Abstract
1,157,318. Titania. P.P.G. INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 Oct., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965(2)], No. 46258/66. Heading C1N. TiO 2 is coated with a hydrous metal oxide (including SiO 2 ) by forming an aqueous slurry of the TiO 2 in the presence of a hydrolysable metal compound; the latter is hydrolysed in the presence of a basic ion which will form a volatile salt with the anion of the metal compound. The volatile salt is removed and coated TiO 2 recovered substantially free from volatile salt. The slurry may be volatilized at the same time as the volatile salt, e.g. by spray drying, at a temperature high enough to volatilize both water and the volatile salt but below the temperature of discoloration of the pigment. Alternatively, the coated TiO 2 may be recovered without evaporation, e.g. by filtration, and subsequently heated to remove the volatile salt. The basic ion may be ammonium and the metal compound may be a halide of Ti, Al or Si or titanium or aluminium sulphate. Other metals and anions are listed at length. The slurry may be digested, e.g. at pH 5À2 to 9.5, for from 5 minutes to 6 hours at 30-100‹ C. after addition of metal oxide and before spray drying, evaporation or filtration. The slurry may contain <85% by wt. TiO 2 . Spray drying may be carried out at <700‹ C. and at a pressure of 10 to 20 Ibs. per sq. in. absolute pressure.
