[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A device to provide auxiliary temporary jet thrust to aid control of an aircraft comprises an insulated tank 8 of water or fuel heated to above its vaporization temperature whence it is led through narrow ducts 9, to be released when required through jets 11. The water or fuel may be heated either on the ground from an auxiliary source, or from an electrical resistance heater, or from a heat exchanger 12 heated by the engine exhaust gases. The ejection of the heated water, which immediately vaporizes, may be used to either augment the propulsive thrust, or augment lift, or entrain some other fluid (e.g. fuel fron the fuel tanks to jettison it) or assist control. The heated liquid may be ejected either into internal air passages in the main area, or over control areas to correct boundary layer breakaway, or to reduce drag. In the event of an engine failure, the device may be used to eject into the jet engine nozzles, possibly with entrained fuel or ambient air, to provide sufficient energy to avoid an accident.
