Filling containers.-Two flowable food products of different colours are filled in a spiral pattern into a container by relative rotation, during filling, of the container and a nozzle providing a composite stream for filling it. In the form illustrated spaced rotating supports 35 (Fig. 1) lift each container in turn from a conveyer and spin it as it is filled from a nozzle 23. The container is gradually lowered as it is filled, and a valve within the nozzle is helped to secure a sharp cut-off of material by raising the nozzle abruptly at the end of the feed. The nozzle is provided with a feed 95 of ice cream and a feed 96 of coloured syrup which forms a separate thread towards the outside of the icecream stream. A separate valve within the nozzle may control the feed of syrup. Several containers disposed side-by-side may be filled simultaneously. Applying lids; expelling air.-Lids 120 (Fig. 19) are withdrawn from a magazine 119 (Fig. 1) by a suction member 150 which rotates, as it is lowered to drop the lid on to the filled container. The container is then squeezed by fixed ramps at the sides of the conveyer or by inwardly moving plungers, to ensure the escape of air, and the lid is pressed into position by a member 165 so that portion 155 (Fig. 19) of the lid takes under a bead 154 on the container. An alternative container (Fig. 21, not shown) has a square-section bead at its other edge, and this takes into a corresponding groove in the skirt of the lid.
