A telephone answering and message recording device of the kind which reverts back to its standby condition in readiness to accept another call in response to the brief interruption in line voltage or current at the release of the connection by the calling party, replays the recorded messages in response to a code transmitted by an authorized caller. The code signal, which may be one or more tones generated by a whistle or electric portable generator, is transmitted and recorded after the caller receives the usual invitation to record a message, and upon being detected the device rewinds the recording tape and replays any previously recorded messages. The detection once again of the code signal recorded at the end of the messages may cause the device to replay the messages again or alternatively may switch the device back to a recording state to enable the caller to record his own message, but if he wishes to hear the messages again the code signal must be transmitted again. At any time the caller may hang-up to revert the device to a stand-by condition. If replay was in progress, however, the subsequently recorded message on the next call begins at the point on the recording tape where replay was terminated and in this way the authorized caller can remove some or all of the previously recorded messages by overrecording the ones yet to come. However, normally the caller hangs up at the end of the messages but before hearing the code signal.
