1,157,071. Storage apparatus. P.E. CONSULTING GROUP Ltd. 12 July, 1966 [12 July, 1965], No. 29482/65. Heading B8E. [Also in Division G3] Apparatus for storage and handling of items, includes a pair of elongated endless conveyers 9, 10 adapted to support containers, e.g. pallets 12, carrying items of different types in a predetermined sequence, transfer means for transferring containers between the conveyers, means for moving the conveyers so that the containers are moved successively to at least one unloading station, and data processing means for controlling the apparatus in response to a comparison of the items removed with prerecorded data indicative of unloading requirements, means being provided to replace empty containers by full ones. The conveyers 9, 10 are disposed above reserve storage racks 1 disposed on each side of aisles and serviced by cranes adapted to move incoming pallets between intake conveyers 5 and the racks 1 and pallets between the racks 1 and elevators 7, 11 linking the conveyers 9, 10. Unloading of the pallets takes place when they are on the elevators 7, 11. Goods removed manually from the pallets are placed on loading conveyers, bridging trolleys (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), being provided. Each loading conveyer has checking apparatus, e.g. a photo-cell activated by a light source, which records the passage of each item, and when identity exists between the number of items passed and that recorded in the data processing means the loading conveyer is stopped. The conveyers 9, 10 are operated by hydraulic rams. During each unloading operation, the data processing means controls the operation of indicating counting devices disposed adjacent the operators to indicate the number of items to be unloaded. When empty pallets have to be replaced the cranes locate the replacement pallets on conveyers A in accordance with the anticipated requirements. The empty pallets are lowered by the elevators 7, 11 and discharged to conveyers B. The conveyers A are then operated to place the replacement pallets on the elevators 7, 11. The conveyers 9, 10 may be replaced by conveyers disposed in the same plane and with horizontal circulation. The data processing means may be a computer, or punched cards or tapes.
