A moderator stack for a nuclear reactor comprises a plurality of columns of blocks of moderator material, e.g. graphite, placed one upon another, the blocks being keyed to blocks in adjacent columns in such a manner that the blocks can move vertically relative to one another and transversely toward and away from one another in a plane normal to the column axes while maintaining the relative relationship between the column axes, the keying being effected by keys making sliding engagement with the walls of keyways in the blocks at spaced zones along the. keyways. The keyways may be disposed in the block side surfaces, and/or at the corners. The keys may have a reduced central part and co-operate by way of their ends with keyways having a constant width, or have a widened central part and cooperate with the keyways by way of this central part. Alternatively, the keys may have a constant width and the keyways a widened or reduced central part. The keys may be either integral with or separate from the blocks. In other variants, the keys are integral with the blocks and form tenons either at the block ends or in the central part of the blocks which cooperate with keyways having a constant width. The keyways may contain filler elements between the tenons.
