Abstract

[Also in Division H4] The pressure difference across the wall of a bellows is indicated by vibrating the wall and measuring the resonant frequency of vibration. An altimeter comprises an aneroid capsule 10 resiliently supported at its rim and vibrated at its natural resonance frequency by means of driving and pick-up transducers connected respectively to the output and input of a valve amplifier. As shown, the transducers comprise loudspeaker units 56, the cones 54 of which are coupled to the capsule by members 50, 51. The resonant frequency is indicated on a frequency meter in the amplifier output circuit. In alternative embodiments the transducers may comprise ferromagnetic discs (15,16) mounted on the capsule walls and co-operating with adjacent electromagnets (19, 20, Fig. 1), or may be Piezo-electric.
