Abstract
1156523 Electric heating resistors TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 12 July 1966 [15 July 1965] 31268/66 Headings A4A B1 and B2 [Also in Division H1] A self-regulating electric heating device includes a steep-sloped (above the anomaly point) positive temperature coefficient heating resistor, e.g. of carbon black filled, cross-linked polyethylene, which is ductile, machineable, mouldable, extruable and thus formable to desired configurations. Such a heater element 12, with electrically conductive, e.g. silver, layers 14 and 16 and an encasing electrical and thermal insulation 18, of a material such as polyethylene, having a similar thermal expansion coefficient, forms a butter dish 10 for maintaining butter at a predetermined temperature. Such a utensil may have a plurality of such heater elements, see Figs.2, 3 (not shown), and they may be selectively energizable and have different anomaly point temperatures. The heating elements are used in fluid heaters 80 for heating tubes 84, which may be open at both ends for passage of fluid therethrough, e.g. as in hair driers or heat guns. Alternatively, the tubes 84 may be sealed at one end for heating various ingredients therein. A voltage is impressed between copper conductors 86 and 88 to cause current flow through element 82, see also Fig.5 (not shown), in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the heater.
