Abstract
115,649. Scott, D. J. Sept. 7, 1916. Tripping and like arrangements.-A web printing-press is provided with controlling means adapted to stop positively the drive of the whole or part of the web-forwarding means and to prevent entirely feeding and printing of the web while the printing-mechanism continues to run with the web threaded through the press. When a part only of the web-forwarding means is stopped, means are provided to sever the web between that part and the part that remains driven. Fig. 1 shows a rotary offset web printing-press, the impression cylinders 1 of which are simultaneously tripped by operating either of two trip shafts 6. The web is normally fed by drawing rollers 21, 22 and the rollers 14 of the delivery apparatus. The printing cylinders and rollers 21, 22, 14 are driven in timed relation by trains of gears shown from a driving shaft 10, and the roller 22 is controlled by a clutch D operatively connected by linkage 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 to one of the trip shafts 6. When either of the trip shafts 6 is operated, the cylinders 1 are tripped to stop the printing action and the clutch D is simultaneously opened to stop the feed of the web by the rollers 21, 22. As the rollers 14 continue to run, a knife 59 operated by an extension of the link 26 is provided to sever the web immediately beyond the rollers 21, 22. The clutch mechanism is shown in Fig. 7, and comprises a clutch member 37 fixed to the shaft) 35 of the roller 22 and a sliding driven member 36 operated by a bell-crank lever 38 which is operated by a second bell-crank lever 42 connected to the link 26. In a modification, the clutch D is positioned so as to disconnect the drive of the rollers 14 as well as the drawing rollers 21, 22, the clutch being so constructed as to allow re-engagement only when the delivery and printing apparatus are in proper timed relationship. The invention is also shown as applied to machines having various other types of printing and delivery apparatus.
