Abstract

1,156,321. Making netting. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. 24 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 21919/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A porous fibrous web is produced by stretching a sheet of cellular material in at least one direction until substantially all the walls between the cells have ruptured and the remnants of the walls form a net-like structure. The cells are preferably uniformly distributed throughout the material and occupy at least 15% of the volume of the material. The stretching may be carried out in two directions at right angles to each other, as by means of a stenter. Alternatively the cellular material may be clamped in a frame, and fluid applied under pressure to one side, to cause the material to balloon outwardly. The fibrous web may be produced by forming the sheet into a tube and inflating the tube by a fluid under pressure. The sheet may be cellular glass or metal or a polymeric material such as, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, a polyester, polyolefin or a polybutene-1. The net-like structure may be further stretched to orientate the molecular structure of the remaining cell walls. The porous fibrous web may also be rubbed between rubber surfaces to develop a soft handle. Several cellular material formations are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,028,450.
