Abstract

In a method of packaging an item with a piece of axially oriented thermoplastic film, wherein at least one edge of said piece is heatsealed and the film is thereafter shrunk into tensioned juxtaposition with the item, an elongated cutting member is placed between the item and the film with the distal end thereof extending across the site of the heat-sealed edge, prior to the heat-sealing operation, the proximal portion of the cutting member is anchored against displacement with respect to the film and the edge of the film at the previously selected site is heat-sealed to encapsulate the cutting member without severing at the point where it passes through the heatsealed edge. The cutting member may be anchored to the item, e.g. by a staple, a knot engaging in a notch or an adhesive tab; or to the film, e.g. by a series of tabs, by threading through slits in the film or by stitching with the aid of a separate thread.
