In an apparatus for determining the position of a detection mark 15 Fig. 2 on an object 6 moving relative to the apparatus along a pre-determined path, a beam of radiation 5 is directed so that during movement it becomes incident on the mark and two detectors are arranged to receive radiation reflected from the object, the detectors being associated with individual stop means 9, 19 each arranged to block radiation reflected from a different part of the irradiated area so that the detectors receive radiation from different parts of the area. The mark may be a hole and the beam visible light or infrared brought to the size of the hole by collimating means. Paint having a reflectivity less than that of the object may be used for marking.
