Abstract

1,155,565. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; cutting by a heated wire. ARISTOC Ltd. 24 June, 1966 [26 June, 1965]. No. 27176/65. Headings B5A and B5K. Apparatus for severing and/or sealing thermoplastic material, e.g. bags, comprises an electric conducting means, e.g. a wire 4, heated by passing an electric current therethrough and means responsive to the expansion of the wire 4 consequent upon being heated for limiting the temperature attained thereby. The wire 4 is stretched between arms 2, 5 pivoted about points 3, 6, respectively. The arm 2 is connected to a coil spring 1 and the movement thereof is limited by the length of the wire 4 and by an adjustable stop 7 limiting the movement of the arm 5. As the wire 4 expands the spring 1 moves the arm 2 so as to open a switch 53 to stop the supply of current to the wire 4. The stop 7 is adjustable to alter the longitudinal extension of the wire 4 necessary before the switch 53 is open to alter the temperature attained by the wire 4. The wire 4 is mounted on a head (not shown) movable vertically relative to a table on which a thermoplastic bag to be sealed is located and as the head is lowered adjacent to the table surface current is supplied to the wire 4. After sealing, as the wire 4 is raised, it is reheated to burn-off any thermoplastic material remaining thereon. A circuit for the operation is described, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), two wires located mutually perpendicular to each other are provided to seal a bag along two mutually perpendicular axes. In further modifications, switching means prevents current passing through the wire after it has attained the correct working temperature with the head in the lowered position, automatic drop means is provided to hold the head in the lowered position until the severed material has cooled and been sealed, and, for the sealing a heavy gauge thermoplastic material, a rod, bar or a flat element on edge is provided.
