Abstract

1,155,356. Magnetic head. SPERRY RAND CORP. 15 March, 1967 [9 May, 1966], No. 12212/67. Heading G5R. A magnetic recording/play back head comprises an electrically conducting wire 12, e.g. of beryllium copper coated with a layer 13 of magnetic material, e.g. a nickel-iron alloy, and formed with a longitudinal channel 14 which exposes the conductor and forms a recording gap in the magnetic material. The wire diameter may be 0À5-5mils., the coating may be 10,000 angstroms thick produced by electro-plating and the recording density may be 3000 bits per inch. Connections may be made to the conductor along its length to provide a number of separate heads for multi-track recording, Fig. 4 (not shown). The wire may be square, rectangular or triangular in cross-section and during the plating processes the magnetic material may be treated to form an easy direction of magnetization circumferential to the wire axis.
