[Also in Division B5] An impregnated paper is obtained by coating a thermoplastic resin having a zero shear melt viscosity at 200‹ C. of 3 x 10<SP>2</SP> to 5 x 10<SP>4</SP> poises on a surface of a decorated paper prepared by applying a decoration by way of printing, colouring or patterning to a paper having a density of 0À8 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> or less and a thickness of 150 Á or less and then heating the coated paper to impregnate the decorated paper with the resin. The term decorated papers includes papers printed with letters, pictures or patterns, e.g. a wood-grain pattern by gravure, offset, or screen process printing; papers coloured with dye or pigment; papers having uneven watermarks on the surfaces; papers having enclosed patterns prepared by incorporating silk yarns into the paper. The paper is preferably made on a cylinder machine. A preferred printing ink is one in which nitrocellulose or cyclocaoutchauc is used as a binder. The impregnation resin may be, e.g., polypropylene, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, a methacrylic resin or polyvinyl chloride. The impregnated papers are incorporated in moulded thermoplastic resin articles to give them a decorated surface (see Division B5).
