Abstract

1,154,952. Change-speed control. J. G. MACDONALD. 16 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 52053/66. Headings F2D and F2L. A vehicle transmission includes an epicyclic gear unit 9 of which the annulus 10 is driven by a variable-speed hydrostatic gear 2, 4, a manual control lever 37 being movable along slots in a gate 56 so arranged that movement of the lever along longitudinal slots 57, 59 controls the hydrostatic gear pump 2 and movement along lateral slots 58, 60 actuates a selector valve 28 for ratio clutches 20, 21 on the drive-shaft of the hydrostatic motor 17. Transmission details.-The input shaft 1 driving the pump 2 carries a pinion 7 meshing with a pinion 8 integral with the sun pinion 11, the output shaft 14 being integral with the planet carrier 13. Annulus 10 is integral with a pinion 70 driven by alternative ratio pinions 22, 23 coupled to the housings of clutches 20, 21. The hand lever 37 pivots about a pin 38 on a bracket 39 to operate the pump control lever 3 and is rotatable about a shaft 48 to operate links 42, 43 controlling selector valve 28 which consists of a piston with spaced lands 50, 59 and working in a cylinder with a central pressure supply port 56, end exhaust ports 53, 54 and intermediate outlet ports 51, 52 connected to the clutches 21, 20 respectively. Operation.-With hand lever 37 in the middle of lateral slot 58 the pump control lever 3 is in neutral setting and valve 28 admits pressure liquid to lock both clutches 20, 21 so that input shaft 1 drives output shaft 14 at a basic forward speed through pinions 7, 8. Movement of lever 37 towards slot 57 results in release of clutch 21, clutch 20 remaining engaged, so that as lever 37 is moved rightwards along slot 57 pump lever 3 is operated and the annulus 10 and shaft 14 are driven at increasing speed by pinions 22, 24. Movement of lever 37 from the middle of slot 58 towards slot 59 releases clutch 20 and engages clutch 21, whereby movement of lever 37 to the left along slot 59 puts pump lever 3 in reverse setting and the shaft 14 is driven at decreasing speed through pinions 23, 25 until at the end of the slot the shaft is substantially stationary. In that position movement of lever 37 along lateral slot 60 releases both clutches 20, 21, permitting towing or pushing of the vehicle.
