Abstract
1,154,553. Gas lighters. L. S. DEXTER. 19 July, 1966, No. 32434/66. Heading F4F. A gas lighter comprises a fuel housing 12 surrounded by a casing 11 which at its upper part substantially encloses burner nozzle 17, flint wheel 16 and burner valve operating lever 18, the lever being pivoted below the flint-wheel and having mounted on its end remote from the burner valve a button 19 which when pressed by an operator's thumb after rotation of the flint-wheel raises the opposite end of the lever which is attached to the nozzle, thereby opening the burner valve. The lever pivots about depending legs 33 which contact the upper surface 25 of the housing 12 and the flint-wheel rotates about a pin 21 journalled in the upstand arms 22 of a U-shaped member welded to surface 25. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 the pin 21<SP>1</SP> which passes through the flint wheel is journalled in vertically elongated slots in arms 22<SP>1</SP> and pressure on the flint-wheel moves it down against flint spring 30<SP>1</SP> causing a tab 33<SP>11</SP> of flint holder 28<SP>11</SP> to tilt lever 18<SP>1</SP> and open the burner valve which allows a priming charge of fuel to pass to nozzle 17<SP>1 </SP>. The burner valve, Fig. 7, comprises a housing 39 screw threaded into housing 12 and is closed at its lower end by a cap 43 by loosely screw threading to a neck 44 thereby allowing fuel to flow therebetween. The fuel then flows through rubber packing 45, around slotted washer 46, through bores 48 and 51 to a space 50 normally closed by a poppet valve 53 located at the lower end of nozzle 17. The valve is opened by lifting the poppet valve 53 from its 0-ring seal 55 against the action of spring 57. Variation of the flame height is made by rotating a member 60 using set screw 65 which projects outside the lighter casing, the rotating varying the position of the 0-ring seat. A refill valve 70, Fig. 8, comprises a tubular member 72 threaded into lighter housing 12 and formed with an extension 74 which retains a bored seal 79 through which extends a nozzle 76. The nozzle is formed with a partial axial bore 77 which terminates in radial apertures 85 normally closed by the seal. A refill container during refilling will depress the nozzle against the action of a spring 80 to expose apertures 85 to the interior of the fuel housing 12.
