Abstract

1,154,501. Radio direction-finding. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS - G.m.b.H. 10 May, 1962 [10 May, 1961], No. 18106/62. Heading H4D. In a radio direction finding antenna system, a number of identical horn antennµ are mounted in a circle, with their polar diagrams directed radially outwards and overlapping. In one embodiment, the antennµ feed into a common load resistor through modulators each of which has a second input supplied from a phaseshifter energized from a common auxiliary oscillator, each second input being 45 degree phase displaced with respect to the adjacent inputs. The output from the common load is taken to a phase splitting device and next through two sampling devices, controlled from the auxiliary oscillator, to the mutually perpendicular deflection systems of a CRT display unit. The angular position of the display spot in the CRT screen is a function of the bearing of the received signal. The radial distance of the spot from the screen centre is a function of the signal field strength. In a second embodiment, both the frequency of the received signal as well as the target direction are displayed. In this case, the received signals at the load resistor control the sampling devices and the quadrature CRT deflecting voltages are of constant amplitude and are supplied by the auxiliary oscillator. When the output of the latter is amplitude modulated in accordance with the incident signal frequency, the distance of the display spot from the CRT centre is a measure of this modulation frequency.
