Delivery of articles stored in piles.-The apparatus is adapted to deliver an article from one of several piles of goods of different values or of the same value. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for delivering from piles of different values. A selector bar d mounted in a spring-controlled carriage i reciprocating on guide-rods j is moved laterally (by the operation of a spring-controlled pull-bar h, Fig. 3) in a direction at right-angles to the direction of movement of the carriage, so as to bring a projection k into position opposite the operating-lever c of the delivery slide of the required pile, the selector bar and carriage then moving forward with the pull-bar to effect the delivery of the article. The selector bar is provided with a rack d' and is moved laterally by a pinion e, which is secured to a second pinion c<1> operated by a rack f on the pull-bar, until the stepped end of the selector bar engages a coincontrolled stop l. Springs v which oppose the forward movement of the carriage are stronger than the springs w opposing the forward movement of the pull-bar. The carriage i may be prevented from returning, until the selector bar has returned to the normal position, by the engagement of a hook y pivoted to the framework with a hooked bar y<1> secured to the selector bar. Alternatively, the selector bar may be returned positively to the normal position during the latter part of the outward movement of the carriage. In the case of piles of goods of the same value, the coin.controlled stop l is lifted clear of the selector bar by the inserted coin or coins, and the movement of the selector bar is determined by hand-operated stops; if however the goods in the different piles are of the same kind, a stop limiting the movement of the selector bar may come into position automatically as each pile is exhausted. Coin action, multiple.-The coin mechanism is the same as that described in Specification 115,252. The stop l is adapted to be lifted, to an extent proportional to the value of the coin or coins Inserted, by means of driving pawls n, which are mounted on coin-actuated levers m, and cooperate with a rack on the stop, a detent o serving to maintain the stop in the raised position; thus a halfpenny serves to raise the stop through the space of one tooth, and a penny two teeth. Separate pawls are provided for each value of coin, the different coins being directed to their respective pawls by a coin-sorter p. Returning coin.-The inserted coin or coins pass from the coin mechanism into a hopper q, which is carried by the selector bar and is provided with a pivoted bottom r adapted to be tilted during the forward movement of the carriage by a catch x disposed adjacent to each pile of goods. If however, the selected pile is exhausted, the corresponding catch x is lifted into the inoperative position and the pivoted bottom is tilted in the reverse direction to effect the return of the coin by a stop on the framework.
