Abstract

115,397. Leyland Motors, Ltd., and Thomas, J. G. P. May 3, 1917. Operating and controlling variable-speed gearing.-In operating-gear, particularly applicable for use with the epicyclic gear described in Specification 115,267, a controller-shaft carries a series of notched collars adapted to be engaged and locked by the ends of a series of levers used for actuating the speed-changing members. A controller-shaft 25, rotated by a hand-lever 32, a shaft 33, and bevel-gearing 31, carries cams 26 - - 30 with which engage levers 19 - - 23 loose on a shaft 18 and operating the clutches and brakes. The shaft 25 is so rotated by the lever 32 as to permit movement of the operating-levers to engage with notches in the cams in the required order. The levers 19 - - 23 engage with lost-motion sleeves 19b - - 23b pinned to the shaft 18 so that a pedallever 24 may be actuated to rotate the shaft 18 and raise all the levers 19 - - 23 so as to disengage all the clutches and brakes. The shaft 18 may also be rotated by a lever operated by a piston 37 in a cylinder 38, which may be connected to the induction-pipe 42 of the engine driving the gear. A valve 45, automatically operated when the hand-lever 32 is raised to change the gear, connects the pipe 42 and cylinder 38 so that, when the throttle is partly or wholly closed, the suction lifts the piston 37 and the shaft 18 is rotated and the clutches &c. are all returned to neutral. More than one cylinder 38 may be provided. The shaft 18 may be rotated by an engine-driven air-pump or by electro-magnetic means.
