Abstract
1,153,976. Haemostat device. AMP. Inc. 29 Dec., 1967 [10 Jan., 1967], No. 59036/67. Heading A5R. A haemostat is loaded with a surgical ligating device in which a surgical ligature extends through openings in a locking member 1 to form a running noose 10 which can be closed around a severed blood vessel 60 by pulling on a draw portion 11 of the ligature, the haemostat comprising a pair of arms 12, 14 connected by a pivot 16 so as to provide jaws 18, 24 with gripping surfaces which can be closed about the blood vessel, there being a projection 54 extending from the haemostat and to which the noose of the ligature is secured, the draw portion 11 of the ligature passing through a passageway 32 in one of the jaws so as to extend between the locking member and the projection 54 around which the draw portion is also looped, the draw portion extending from the projection to anchoring means on one of the arms to form a loop, the noose being capable of being freed from the projection by pulling on the loop. As shown, projections (52), 54 are formed at each end of the pivot 16 and the end of the draw portion is secured within a sheath member 40 to the arm 14. In use, the haemostat is applied to clamp the blood vessel, and the draw portion 11 and the sheath 40 are then pulled (Figure 6, not shown) so that the noose 10 moves up and off the ends of the haemostat and is tightened around the blood vessel. The haemostat is of glass-filled polystyrene material and the passageway 32 in the gripping part 24 may be provided with a metallic insert 34 which may be used (Figure 7, not shown) to cutoff the draw portion after the noose has been tightened. The sheath member may be replaced by an adhesively applied coating.
