Abstract

1,153,269. Preparation of sulphurized alkyl phenol. LUBRIZOL CORP. 7 March, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 11169/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention relates to a method for the preparation of sulphurized alkyl phenol in which the alkyl substituent has at least 6 carbon atoms which comprises reacting the alkyl phenol with a sulphur halide in the presence of a basically reacting compound, e.g. a metal carboxylate preferably sodium acetate, an amine, a metal carbonate or an oil-soluble alkaline earth metal carbonate dispersion which is non-reactive with the phenol and the sulphur halide. Several examples are given showing the improvement in colour of the product when a hydrogen chloride acceptor is present.
