Abstract

In an automatic vending system a customer inserts a coding device or a key 12, individually coded by magnets, into a device 11 in a vending bay 10 whereby a number of reed switches are operated and interrogating pulses, e.g. at 100 per sec. when a customer releases articles or at a slower rate for operating release mechanism, on lines 14 to each bay, are sent as a customer identification signal via diodes and lines 15 common to all bays to a data processor 13 which then releases an article and stores its price and/or identity with the customer identification. At the checkout desk, the key is inserted in a signalling unit whereby the processor transmits the prices to a printer 17 which totalises them. The articles may be on a tray covered by a transparent blind which is moved, e.g. by a solenoid, to expose one item after the customer identification is received at 13. A central peg on the key may release an item and the coding device may be a plug with diodes between the pins or a glove having contacts and a transponder and store. Unauthorized removal of an article may operate a switch and an alarm. The processor may keep a record of the stock as articles are dispensed.
