Abstract

115,254. Human, A. H., and Kestner Evaporator & Engineering Co. March 29, 1917. Direct air-pressure apparatus, automatic, aircompressing devices, applications of; valves for pressure fluid, actuation of; valves for pressure fluid, arrangement of.- Apparatus for raising liquids comprises a forcing chamber A with liquid inlet and delivery valves D, E, and with two valve seatings A<1>, A<2> for a float valve A<3> which controls the admission and exhaust of the pressure fluid. The chamber communicates by a pipe H with a chamber J which is adapted to be connected alternately to a high-pressure air chamber L or a pressure pump and a low-pressure air chamber K or a vacuum pump. Communication between the chambers J, K is controlled by a non- return valve N which is adapted to be closed by suction in the chamber K and is connected to a high-pressure valve M controlling communication between the chambers J, L. The valve-rod carries a balancing piston 0 and a weight 0'. A relief valve Q is arranged between the chambers J. K. When the valve N is open, the suction in the chamber K draws liquid into the chamber A until the valve A<3> closes the pipe H. The vacuum increases in the chamber K, and closes the valve N, and opens the valve M. The high-pressure air then passes from the chamber L to the chamber A and expels the liquid. When the valve A<3> seats at A', the air pressure in the chamber J increases and opens the relief valve Q, thereby destroying the vacuum in the chamber K and enabling the weight 0' to open the valve N and close the valve M. The cycle is then repeated. In a modification, the chamber K is connected to the suction side of a double-acting air-pump, and the chamber L to the pressure side, and the piston O is replaced by a non-return valve adapted to connect the chamber L to the atmosphere when the valve N is open. In another form, shown in Fig. 3, the pipe H is connected alternately to sources of low and high pressure air through a two-way rotary valve S connected by an arm S' to the piston T' of a servo-motor T. The piston T<1> is actuated by air derived from the high pressure chamber and admitted alternately to opposite ends of the cylinders by valves T' and pipes T<2>, T<3>. The valves T<4> are actuated by changes of pressure in the pipe H produced by the seating of the valve A<3>. The movement of the valves T<4> may be controlled by a dash-pot U or by providing a restricted passage V<1> for the passage of high-pressure air to the top of the valve.
