Abstract

1,152,495. Recording data on pneumatic tyres. UNIROYAL, Inc. 5 July, 1966 [20 Aug., 1965], No. 30132/66. Heading B7C. [Also in Division G4] A digital magnetic code recorded on circumferential magnetizable members, such as bead wires, on axially opposite sides of a tyre carcass is made up of an indexing digit in circumferential alignment on the two members, and information digits relatively angularly displaced on the two members. Apparatus for recording the code comprises a set of magnetizing members arranged circumferentially around each magnetizable member with a magnetizing member of one set in alignment with a magnetizing member of the other set for recording the indexing digit, the other magnetizing members in each set being displaced from those in the other set for recording the information digits. Apparatus for reading the code comprises two magnetic pick-up means synchronously rotatable about the tyre axis along a path adjacent the associated magnetizable member and active to develop electrical code pulses representing the digits. Pulse-translating means rotatable synchronously with and coupled to the pick-up means are coupled to a detector responsive to the indexing digits to actuate a timing-pulse developer emitting pulses at intervals equal to those between the pick-up of successive information digits of a correctly-coded tyre. A circuit receiving inputs from the timing-pulse developer and the pick-up means develops and stores on output representing the individual information digits on the magnetizable members. The read-off apparatus is such that the code can be read with the tyres the correct way up or inverted. The coded information may be used for inventory control and tyre sorting; information on several tyres may be decoded by machines at different locations, stored centrally, and scanned to control tyre sorting at the several machines.
