Sewage containing hydrogen sulphide or other odorous compounds containing an -SH group are treated with α,#-unsaturated aldehydes or ketones. The following are exemplified:- 3 - butene - 2 - one, 3 - hydroxy - 2 - cyclohexen- 1 - one, 4 - methoxy - 3 - buten - 2 - one, 4 - (2 - furyl) - 3 - buten - 2 - one, 5 - phenyl - 2,4 - pentadienophenone, 3 - penten - 2 - ones, 3 - hexen-2-ones (mesityl oxide), 3-hepten-2-ones and 3-octen-2-ones, acrolein, trans-2-butenol, crotonaldehyde, trans-cinnamaldehyde, tiglaldehyde, 2-pentanal, 2-hexanal and 2-heptanal. Solvents and stabilizers may be present.
